I live in Toronto Canada and as of June 1st all the stores I visit started charging for plastic bags and heavily pushing the re-usable type. Previous to June 1st only the lower end stores that provided boxes charged for plastic bags. It's quite a disappointment.

Quite so. The law of unintended consequences strikes again. And yet again the call for controlling the control goes out. JD

Keith - thanks for writing about this and for noting the pressure the WWF puts on Canada for environmental issues. Unfortunately, our politicians cave in to such pressure. Canada has taken a lot of abuse from environmrntalists lately for pulling out of Kyoto, expanding the fishery and sanctioning the seal hunt. Most importantly, you commented about "living". Where the seal hunt is concerned, our northern communities rely on it as one of the very few industries that form their economic base. PETA would have it taken away from them so they can either live in abject poverty or be forced to leave the land they own for other territories in order to earn a living. It's PETA's declaration that seals have more rights to live than humans and it's rather irrational.

Yet another great victory in the Green fight. They replace things that are "evil" with things that are even worse! Take the "energy efficient" light bulbs for example. You know, the ones filled with mercury that require special processing and handling to dispose of.
