Sir,the genesis of the last crisis was short-sightedness, high stakes gambling, incompetence and personal greed at the institutional level. The push of the government for loans to the weaker segments was a small part of the big picture. The damage has extended throughout the economy. So, even tough I have little confidence on the capabilities of the government, I can't trust the financial institutions either. They have to be monitored more closely. Even Greenspan acknowledged that much.

Mr. Epstein,
Thank you! As a past VP of Marketing for 2 small electronics companies, I have to express gratitude for your words. Everyone would suspect that, when a surgeon is about to make a precise incision on your chest to operate and save your life, that is not the moment when someone from the government to go jiggling that surgeon's elbow. What people don't even suspect is that a businessman, faced with a moment when hid decision about what products to offer, what outreach to potential customers to make, what prices to set for products and services to make, has his job, the jobs of his employees and the well-being of his business at stake, all these bringing life-and-death consequences for those who stand to gain or lose, depending on the wisdom of his choices. No businessman can function and make such sensitive decisions, when the great greedy god government can intervene at any moment with demands of its own.
You used the word "dictatorship". What else can it be when a man who studied and taught constitutional law at major US universities, swore to uphold the Constitution when he took the oath of office and, then, proceeds to dictate salaries, bonuses and business practices to financiers, bankers and automakers, and then proposes to take over the entire medical industry. If that is not yet totalitarianism, it is not from lack of intent. Dictatorship in America! Did the educated in this country learn nothing from the mass-murdering failures of the 20th century?
Keep up the good words, sir!

This article doesn't have anything to do with reality. Loans to poor people destroyed our economy? Really? It didn't maybe have to do with loan officers who encouraged people to lie on their applications? Or taking risky mortgages and bundling them into insanely complicated securities that were then rated as AAA even though they were junk?
