When oil was discoverd, the sellers of whale oil probably said: "Most of the lighting in America is from whale oil". We can't continue to do something, just because that's the way we've always done it! Free and forever means that the sun will always shine, and the wind will always blow. Sun and wind don't have to be mined or pumped.

Surely you realise The 'FREE FOREVER' thing refers to anybody being able to access and use it (WIND-sailboat,windmill etc - I'd like to see you alone pull some fossil fuel out of the ground and run your car on it).
Let's face it, GREEN fuels are a lot more 'free and forever' than oil or coal, and somewhat easier to access.
It would also be very hard for elitists to fence it off and sell it at ridiculous cost.
I AM NOT A GREENY and don't believe in co2 from industry being a major contributing factor to the climate change.
I DO, however, believe that if you intend to 'educate' people you should not let your anger or distaste for certain subjects get in the way of the facts.
I don't know if I've ever read an article of yours before, but you seem like such an intelligent person - and literate too(so many PC owners aren't), I'm sure you were just letting your passion get the better of you.
By the way, I enjoyed your article, and also I mean no offence.I just feel the need for an alternative energy that cant be 'fenced off' or manipulated for the powers that be to suck the guts out of us all.
    Once again, no offence intended.
Thanks for your time, Scott Wilding.

Mother of God! Is this really the level of argument climate change deniers have descended to? Ok, there is no doubt that obtaining energy from renewable resources is currently more expensive that non-renewable energy when we compare the level of energy produced, but that's why we have science. We can (and most believe must) find easier and more economical ways to do this. Isn't this the kind of innovation that Randists are supposed to believe in?

As for your maintenance argument, really? REALLY? Look, nobody is suggesting that we can build machines that will last forever and never require maintenance (except of course Rand, what with her magical air-energy sucking engine). That's just science fiction. But Jesus, the wind doesn't stop whenever a turbine breaks down. The sun won't go into power-saving mode should a solar-panel somewhere require cleaning.

What is it with Randists and your aversion to science and innovation? Why do you blanketly dismiss any scientific evidence that warns of global warming? Why are you so willing to reject any method of acquiring energy that isn't based on an oil-burning system that's over a hundred years old? With your average climate-change denier this is somewhat understandable, but you Randists are supposed to be champions of science and innovation. Every objectivist article on climate change I've encountered (and I mean literally every article) reads like that scene in Atlas Shrugged when Dagny has run off to her cabin and she's asking the women in the store why nobody fixes the road. "The road's always been like that" is quite similar to "we've always been burning oil".

You didn't mention the safest most efficient form of energy we have. Nuclear! It’s the most practical, efficient and (minus the political costs) cheapest form of energy.

Based on everything said above you would predict that Al Gore and the other environmentalists MUST almost by definition be strongly in favor of nuclear - I mean if they like solar , wind, geothermal etc. then logically nuclear which is as clean, safe, comes from the earth and DOES NOT BURN CARBON and actually produces massive amounts of energy must be their favorite.

If it isn't then one might actually begin to question their motives...

Good reasoning, free just means available, but you use the term 'fossil fuel'. Have you determine the claim that oil may have an abiotic origin to be groundless? Is there irrefutable science to confirm the fossil origin?
Thanks, gs
