Elan, I am absolutely fascinated by this, and I can't wait for Part 6. I have a question for you. Are there any doctrines out there describing a typical cultural-intellectual infrastructure and detailing how an ideology achieves hegemony within it? Surely the Soviets did work on this. There is an interplay of politicians, educational institutions, intellectuals/writers, media outlets, the public, etc., and on a strategic and tactical level, we should like to know how to identify "centers of gravity" and how to cut our competitors off at the pass.

I am so glad you are out there as a long-range scout identifying the religious conservatives' movements. (Sorry if the military references are over-the-top). I intend to read D'Souza's book to get a better idea of what he is trying to pull. He is a devious louse.

Elan,

It's a bit of a stretch referring to Sullivan as a conservative, particularly as he is writing in the generally liberal New Republic. Sullivan is very mixed, almost eclectic. He was initially a strong supporter of Bush during before and at the beginning of the Iraq war but he was also always for Gay marriage. He is a believing Catholic, despite Catholicism's hostile attitude toward his sexual orientation. His position is perhaps better termed "free-market liberal" or something similar. I think he did consider himself something of a conservative, and for a while some conservatives agreed.

More recently he has become completely disenchanted with conservatives and what he calls "Christianism" and has headed even further to the left.

Thanks for your very, very thought provoking piece. Doomed Despots always seem to make 'one last stand' - re: post-Renaissance Catholic Church, Hitler's Battle of the Bulge, etc. - and Religionists are following suite. The question remains, however, can the ill effects on society of belief in the God(s) every completely be neutralized?

This belief system and those ill effects have remained essentially unchanged since the time recorded by the Homeric Epics and before. But as life forms those traits of people that enhance survival should be emphasised while all others should disappear, but yet religion does not disappear. In an era of modern technology, this phenomenon is curiouser and curiouser.

Thanks again.
